Marina Luccioni (she/her) is a marine biologist and visual artist who works on projects that interface knowledge and scientific methods from local, indigenous and western academic sources. As a PhD candidate in marine chemical ecology at Stanford University Marina researches links between human and environmental health (focusing on marine neurotoxins), and supports community-based marine management within and outside of her research. Marina is a Knight-Hennessey Scholar and NSF Graduate Research Fellow and holds a BS degree with honors in human biology and the arts. Her PhD is co-advised by Lauren O’Connell and Larry Crowder, under mentorship of “Uncle Mac” Poepoe as part of the Nā Kai ‘Ewalu Native Hawaiian subsistence fishing and stewardship collective.

Marina’s family are Corsican and Indonesian-American immigrants and she was born in the east bay. She has loved coming to Marverick’s beach since she was a teenager, and her family members have harvested there for decades. She is a volunteer docent with the Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and currently lives in El Granada with her partner and dog. Her favorite local fish are the bocaccio rockfish.
