Introducing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
In 2012, California implemented a world-class system of 124 marine protected areas (MPAs), created through a comprehensive stakeholder-led public process. Just as our nation’s parks and wilderness areas protect special places on land, California’s MPAs protect a wide array of ocean and estuarine habitats and species. MPAs provide homes where human disturbance is limited for species like those represented by the Collaborative Critters, in order to protect, restore, and foster diverse marine habitats.

Benefits of MPAs
Biodiversity Conservation
MPAs play a crucial role in protecting diverse marine species and their habitats, helping to prevent extinction and preserve marine ecosystems.
Cultural Preservation
MPAs protect sites of cultural, historical, and spiritual significance to coastal communities, preserving traditions and heritage.
Economic Growth
MPAs boost sustainable tourism and recreational activities, such as diving and eco-tourism, providing income for local communities.
How do we work with MPAs?
Collaborative Network staff work to make it easier for local experts to partner with the state, strengthening connections and facilitating the flow of information between these local MPA professionals and managing agencies, and working closely with California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife, State Parks, Ocean Protection Council and Ocean Science Trust. Collaboratives provide a forum for nonprofits, fishermen, tribal representatives, government staff, municipalities, academic institutions, scientists, teachers, and aquaria to work together to enhance understanding and compliance of MPAs.
