Coastal Quest is pleased to announce 2020 funding awards totaling $889,135.17 to 13 organizations throughout the state of California for the Marine Protected Area (MPA) Outreach and Education Small Grants Program. This competitive grant program provides support to organizations serving many underserved communities to increase ocean stewardship, engagement, compliance, and leadership.  Funding for these projects is provided by the Ocean Protection Council’s Once-Through Cooling (OTC) Interim Mitigation Fund, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and The Marisla Foundation.

The Golden Gate MPA Collaborative is among the awardees who received funding for the 2020 MPA Outreach and Education Small Grants Program to develop four new online MPA learning modules. The training modules are intended to build off the version the Golden Gate Collaborative developed in 2018  to provide online training resources for programs throughout the state and will be approved by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Three of the new modules will feature in-depth information about MPAs in the North, Central, and South Coast. The fourth new module will focus on MPA Compliance, Public Engagement, and Interpretation.

The project team will be working with the MPA Collaborative Network to meet with Collaboratives in each region to discuss this project in more detail and solicit input. Initial outreach to Collaborative Co-Chairs about the project is currently underway. If you are interested in learning more about the project and getting involved, reach out to Co-Chair Morgan Patton (morgan@eacmarin.org). Once the modules are complete based on feedback from members and partners, regional trainings will be held to ensure the effective delivery of the newly updated resource. The modules and regional training meetings are expected to be complete by June 2021, just in time for summer docent trainings!

The project team is looking forward to working with the Collaborative Network to build out these regional specific modules and help to create a lasting resource to compliment volunteer training highlighting the importance of the California network of MPAs.
