Event Details

The Marine Protected Areas Federal Advisory Committee (MPAFAC) provides advice to the Secretaries of Commerce (DOC) and the Interior (DOI) on the effective use of MPAs in conservation and management of important ocean places. Created
by Executive Order 13158 in 2003, the MPAFAC comprises 20 knowledgeable representatives of diverse stakeholder interests in the ocean community. The meetings are open to the public, and the work products and meeting minutes are available on NOAA’s MPA Center’s website (marineprotectedareas.noaa.gov).
These upcoming MPAFAC meetings will be held in conjunction with the Chairs of the 14 National Marine Sanctuary Advisory
Councils, this meeting will focus on:
(i) refining the MPA FAC’s charge and work plans for 2018–2019;
(ii) identifying ways to enhance the impact of the Committee’s recommendations and products;
(iii) establishing subcommittees and working groups, as needed, to address the Committee’s new charge; and,
(iv) engaging with Sanctuary Advisory Council Chairs and other MPA programs to explore common
approaches to emerging issues facing US MPAs.
The morning program on January 17th will include presentations from federal and state experts about the value of the
nation’s marine protected areas and challenges in their management. There will be two opportunities for brief public comments on Wed, Jan. 17 and Thu, Jan. 18 at 4:30-5:30pm.
The agenda is subject to change and will be available later this week on the MPA Center Website.
