About The Orange County Marine Protected Area Council

Created in 2011 during the process of designing and designating California’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network, OCMPAC pioneered an innovative model that engages diverse partners across sectors to advance the management of Orange County’s seven MPAs. Expanding on OCMPAC’s model, statewide partners established the MPA Collaborative Network in 2013, which comprises 14 local MPA collaboratives along the California coast, including OCMPAC, that are generally associated with California’s coastal counties.

Together, the MPA collaboratives provide a localized, comprehensive approach to ocean resource management by bringing together local experts and authorities in the areas of outreach and education, enforcement and compliance, and research and monitoring. The MPA collaboratives contribute significantly to the management of the state’s MPA network, supporting state agencies who are mandated to implement the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). The MLPA directs statewide efforts to advance management of the MPA Network through outreach and education, enforcement and compliance, research and monitoring, and policy and permitting. Since its inception, OCMPAC has served a key role in coordinating organizations to support MPA management in Orange County.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”full_width” type=”container” bg_color=”#0393a3″ p_top=”25px” p_bottom=”25px”][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Providing Consistent Messaging Across Orange County

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator el_width=”20″][vc_row_inner match_height=”yes” vertical_center=”yes”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1523406658780{padding-right: 50px !important;padding-left: 50px !important;}”][vc_column_text el_class=”justify”]The Orange County Marine Protected Area Council (OCMPAC) seeks to provide beach visitors with consistent marine protected area related information throughout the county. For nearly two decades, the organization has accomplished this by developing regional interpretive signage, regional brochures and holding annual docents trainings.

OCMPAC’s Harry the Crab Sign can be found at every marine protected area beach entrance in Orange County. The branded sign provides tide pool patrons with low-impact viewing methods and information regarding how to report fishing violations.

OCMPAC published two regional brochures: a Guide to Tidepool Exploration in Orange County Marine Protected Areas assists the public with identifying intertidal species, and Orange County Marine Protected Areas provides area specific MPA information to the recreational fishing community including: fishing regulations, boundary maps, and links to California Department of Fish and Wildlife resources.

Each year, OCMPAC provides new docent and recurrent docent trainings for all agencies and organizations providing intertidal interpretive programs within Orange County. This helps ensure that docent’s educate tidepool patrons in a consistent manner regardless of their organization or location within the County.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”1466″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”sectionNav”][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][wbc_icon icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-eercast” icon_link=”url:%23indexTop|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][wbc_icon icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-eercast” icon_link=”url:%23education|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][wbc_icon icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-eercast” icon_link=”url:%23research|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][wbc_icon icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-eercast” icon_link=”url:%23compliance|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][wbc_icon icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-eercast” icon_link=”url:%23about|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_js]JTNDc2NyaXB0JTNFJTBBJTBBJTI0JTI4ZnVuY3Rpb24lMjglMjklMjAlN0IlMEElMjAlMjAlMjQlMjglMjdzZWN0aW9uTmF2JTIwYSUyMCU1QmhyZWYlNUUlM0QlMjIlMkYlMjclMjAlMkIlMjBsb2NhdGlvbi5wYXRobmFtZS5zcGxpdCUyOCUyMiUyRiUyMiUyOSU1QjElNUQlMjAlMkIlMjAlMjclMjIlNUQlMjclMjkuYWRkQ2xhc3MlMjglMjdhY3RpdmUlMjclMjklM0IlMEElN0QlMjklM0IlMEElMEElMEElM0MlMkZzY3JpcHQlM0U=[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]
