Del Norte

MPA Collaborative

The Del Norte Collaborative draws its membership from the rich scientific and nonprofit community, tribal governments, fishermen, and agencies active on the North Coast.

To increase compliance at the Pyramid Point State Marine Conservation Area, Collaborative members are working with CDFW on creating a harbor kiosk in Crescent City, and working to raise awareness of MPAs amongst fishermen based in nearby Brookings, Oregon. Additionally, the Del Norte Collaborative is working with the Humboldt Collaborative on producing an engaging MPA Video, which will incorporate the voices of Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation elders.

Tribal MPA Curriculum

The Del Norte Collaborative developed a classroom lesson plan focused on the intersection of MPAs, traditional knowledge and tribal perspectives on ocean stewardship in collaboration with the Humboldt and Mendocino Collaboratives. The lesson plans are part of a teacher toolbox that contains useful place-based cultural curriculum relevant to students in the Del Norte County region. This tribal curriculum is meant to serve as a template for adaptation by other California tribes.

North Coast Expansion of MPA Watch

The Del Norte Collaborative worked closely with MPA Watch to apply statewide metrics to their human-use surveys currently being used as well as creating new MPA Watch sites in Del Norte and Humboldt counties. Volunteers at these sites monitor coastal and marine resource and contribute to a database that has now been extended statewide.

Tolowa Dee-ni’ Sea Life Videos

Learn the Tolowa words for 35 different sea creatures in this set of videos created by the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation. The short videos include a picture of the creature and audio of different speakers showcasing the correct pronunciation.

MPA Video Series

A series of four videos created in collaboration with the Humboldt MPA Collaborative to raise awareness of marine protected areas in the North Coast.

Mini-ROV Expeditions

Marine Protected Area (MPA) Collaborative Members statewide are field-testing Trident mini-ROVs (remotely operated vehicles or underwater drones) in collaboration with SoFar Ocean, National Geographic and the S.E.E. Initiative. More information about Collaborative expeditions focusing on MPA outreach, compliance, and citizen science projects can be found on our Resources page.
